Style Tribes is a series of six individually authored films in which directors take a behind-the-scenes look at some of the UK’s most glamorous industries. The series aimed to catch the essence of the creative processes which shape the UK’s cultural climate, as well as influencing creative trends on the world stage.

Programme 1 Design

Design has always surrounded us in our homes, public spaces and the streets we inhabit. But only recently has the role of the designer achieved cult status. This film looks at the work of British designers and groups from the renaissance of design in Glasgow to world-renowned industrial consultancies like TKO and Hollingtons and new media specialists Deep End and Tomato.

Programme 2 Fashion

From the glamour of the catwalk to the clatter of cashmere looms, designer Anthony Symonds prepares his collection for London Fashion Week. Alexander McQueen’s tribal nose spikes, Whitaker Malem’s leatherwork concoctions and Burberry dog coats also make guest appearances.

Programme 3 Film

We go on location with Michael Caine in John lrvin’s Shiner and meet Oscar nominated director Alex Jovy on the set of Sorted. We observe pre-production on the big budget movie Captain Corel/i’s Mandolin and watch as special effects are created for the headless horseman in Sleepy Ho//ow. Meanwhile marketing decisions are made prior to the premiere of Whatever Happened to Harold Smith?

Programme 4 Music

The contemporary music scene is unveiled with contributions from multi-million-selling Jamiroquai, music from Grammy Award winning Fatboy Slim, Robbie Williams, Radionead, Asian Dub Foundation and Brit Award winners Belle and
Sebastian. How has a tiny island of musical mavericks influenced musical styles for over forty years?

Programme 5 Football

The English Premiership is the most commercially successful football league in the world. The “beautiful” game is played in state-of-the-art stadia and matches are watched live by huge global audiences. At West Ham United conflicts arise
between the commercial pressures of big business and the interests of the club’s loyal and devoted supporters.

Programme 6 Tourism

We visit three diverse tourist venues with unique strategies to pull in the tourists. Warwick Castle, which can trace its origins back 1,000 years, is managed in the style of a history theme park. Cavern City Tours sell Beatles tourism to thousands of Americans and the millennium science attraction Our Dynamic Earth offers the visitor a high-tech interactive experience in Edinburgh.
